Hong Kong guests book direct via Komodo Package HK: HKD pricing, passport-locked quota, end-to-end transfer, no OTA mark-up. Choose Mutiara, Florence or Baronang — three flagship phinisi — and route to Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Komodo Island, Rinca, Kanawa, Kelor or Taka Makassar.
Five centuries of Bugis boat-building: what you are really chartering
The phinisi is a two-masted wooden sailing ship perfected over 500+ years by the Bugis and Konjo boat-building families of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. In 2017, UNESCO inscribed the art of phinisi boatbuilding in South Sulawesi on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — making the phinisi one of the very few traditional sailing vessels in the world still being built, and still sailing, under that recognition.
Each hull is raised by hand using ancestral techniques: keel and body cut from Indonesian ironwood and teak, shaped without modern blueprints — master craftsmen work by eye and by knowledge passed down through generations, and a single vessel can take more than a year to launch. Bugis traders once sailed phinisi along the spice routes; today the same silhouette has been re-imagined as a luxury charter yacht with air-conditioned suites, a private chef and dive equipment. That is why a phinisi is often called a living connection to Indonesia’s seafaring heritage.
For guests who value craftsmanship, heritage and quiet prestige, crossing Komodo National Park under twin masts is a fundamentally different experience from riding a fibreglass motor yacht: the vessel you sleep aboard is itself a piece of cultural heritage under sail.
